Inspiration for Writers

Even more books to ignite the spark of inspiration

Inspiration can come from anywhere, but it might come easier with the help of advice from other writers who know the struggle. These four books will keep the writing fire in you burning with encouraging words and tips to keep in mind.

Writer’s workshops are known to kickstart your creative juices and help guide both your inspiration and your craft. However, if you can’t commit to the time, travel, and money that workshops might require, this book written by a writing seminar host is a good substitute. This book is geared towards new writers, but its entertaining advice is a good reminder for writers of any experience level.

"In this collection of short essays, Annie Dillard—the author of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and An American Childhood—illuminates the dedication, absurdity, and daring that characterize the existence of a writer. - Goodreads

Works in progress are feral and must be broken in

Commitment to a work in progress is humorously (and somewhat morbidly) described as visiting the terminally ill or domesticating a feral beast.

The Writing Life is a no-holds-barred collection of the pains and joys that come with being a writer. Its perspective may seem exaggerated at times, but it is still humorously relatable to writers wrestling to relay a story that stubbornly doesn't want to be told. Annie Dillard teaches you how to get around these struggles, learn to see stories with your eyes, and transfer them to printed pages.

Another book written by a successful author, How I Write is an account by Janet Evanovich on the methods behind writing her bestselling novels. She’ll answer all the questions you want to know about the craft of writing as well as the lifestyle and motives of a writer.

"Writers want to know how a bestselling author thinks, writes, plans, and dreams her books. And they are primed for a book from Janet Evanovich that tells, in a witty Q&A format:

- How she comes up with such remarkable characters

- How she nails the perfect name every time

- How she finds out insider details

- Just how she sets up those masterful plots

- What the life of a full-time writer is really like

- What she'd tell an aspiring author about the publishing industry

- And much, much more!

Inspiration for Janet Evanovich

Janet Evanovich doesn't lie about how hard writing can be, but maintains that she couldn't choose to do anything else.

How I Write details the elements of writing and publishing a novel, and addresses all categories of fiction-from mystery/thriller/action titles to romance; from stand-alone narratives to series. It offers practical and inspiring advice on such subjects as structuring a plot and handling rejection. It also combines one of today's most successful fiction writers with Ina Yalof, a published non-fiction writer who teaches creative fiction. How I Write is the perfect reference for anyone looking to improve their writing, and for those fans who are hungry to find out more about just how Janet Evanovich ticks."

-Macmillan Publishers

This is not a manual, but it is an excellent supplement to more technical how-to-write books and an inside look at the continuing roadblocks and triumphs of an established writer. She reassures the aspiring writer that she had difficulties at the start of her career, and she still encounters some now, but her strong love and motivation to write have carried her to where she is. You can apply what you've seen from Janet Evanovich's journey to your own, and continue on your writer's path with confidence.

There are many different reasons why inspiration may not come easily, and why your words struggle to get to paper. Finding a source of inspiration may be hard, but you might also encounter doubts about your trajectory or your writing itself. 100 Things Every Writer Needs to Know will give you a foundation of knowledge to build your craft on, and you will be able to transform your ideas into stories without hesitation.

This book is a helpful companion to beginning writers. An oldie but goodie that addresses the basics, 100 Things Every Writer Needs to Know is written in a down-to-earth tone. It is organized into one hundred brief chapters about things that a writer should know. Early on in your writing career, there may be times when you find it difficult to choose an idea, organize your writing time, and find useful methods for planning out a piece. 100 Things Every Writer Needs to Know addresses these predicaments.

Scott Edelstein weighs in on feedback culture

Feedback from editors and producers may not come easily, and it may not be worth paying attention to, either.

Information on what options are open to writers, the necessity of agents, expert critics, and how to make a living as a writer is shared in this book. A section addresses how to deal with the so-called "writer's block." (Hint: the author doesn't believe in it.)

The book may not cover all topics extensively, but it gives advice on concerns about every type of writing, from poetry, scripts, and nonfiction, and can be used by writers as a reference guide to all aspects of the art of writing.

Edelstein writes comfortable, introductory prose, allowing you to absorb the information clearly. While Edelstein may not believe in writer's block, he'll help you overcome some of its primary causes by arming you with the knowledge to battle your doubts as a writer, teaching you to organize your thoughts, and analyzing others' criticisms of your work.

Writer’s block and a lack of inspiration are maladies that affect the most accomplished writers. However, something that accomplished writers have in common is that they were able to work through their difficulties in order to produce great works. There are different methods to solving writer’s block just as there are different reasons why writer’s block might exist for each individual writer; these books will give you insight into what strategies are out there and what might work best for you.
