Social Media Hashtags for Authors

What Hashtags Should Authors Use on Social Media?

There are so many hashtags in circulation that I had to narrow down the list. Here are my favorites and their purposes:

#WritingCommunity

Also known and misspelled as #WritingCommmunity, #WritingCommuity, #WritingComnunity (and at least 5 other variations) is used by authors who consider writing their business or a serious hobby. Most users of the hashtag are or plan to be self-published writers. Experts also provide advice using this hashtag.

#WritersLife

#WritersLife is a hashtag about all things writers deal with. Often a place to find snarky comments, amusing anecdotes, and also inspiration, this is worth following.

#IndieAuthor and #IndiePublishing

These hashtags speak for themselves. Follow these you’re looking for advice or would like to share tips and good news with the self-publishing community.

#AmWriting

The classic hashtag used by writers and signals those victorious moments when you’re in fact writing. Spinoffs include #amediting, #amrevising, #amquerying, #shouldbewriting, #amprocrastinating, and more.

#PromoTip

A great hashtag to follow if you’re looking to learn about promoting your book, although it may also bring up non-book-related tips. #BookGiveaway is also a great one to check out and to use in your own promotions, as applicable.

#AskAgent and #AskEditor

Your go-to hashtags when looking for advice from industry pros who freely share their insights. There’s even one for authors: #AskAuthors.

#WritingTip or #WriteTip

This will lead you to all kinds of writing advice. Try not to get addicted to checking these. (I’m speaking from experience.) Variations include: #WritingTips, #WriteTips, and #WritingAdvice. Similar hashtags worth looking into are #PubTip for publishing tips and #QueryTip for querying tips.

Genre-specific

Some hashtags are genre-specific, including #YALit, #RomanceBooks, #PoetryLovers, #WomensFiction, #TrueStories, #UrbanFantasy, and more. Look for the one that covers your genre.
