An Evening with Viet Thanh Nguyen

We just finished working on a wonderful literary event: the LARB Luminary Dinner with Viet Thanh Nguyen.

On December 1, 2019, the Los Angeles Review of Books (LARB), a 501(c)(3) literary nonprofit organization, hosted the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen for a Luminary Dinner. The event was held in the Silver Lake home of CalArts Chair and filmmaker Tim Disney.

We were able to secure sponsorship by Grove Atlantic to help cover the expenses of the event.

We reached out to previous guests of LARB Luminary Dinners and invited them, including those who had attended the events featuring Austin Beutner, Margaret Atwood, and James Ellroy. We also did our usual media outeach (see past posts for that).

On December 1st, Coriolis’s Nanda Dyssou was there as usual to welcome guests and help make sure that they enjoyed their evening.

The event started with a cocktail hour, followed by a seated dinner.

Afterwards, guests were once again welcomed by host Tim Disney.

LARB’s Chairman of the Board Albert Litewka gave a speech.

A throught-provoking conversation between Viet Thanh Nguyen and LARB’s Editor-in-Chief Tom Lutz took place.

“We were not the good refugees. We were the lucky refugees.”

After the conversation, Viet signed copies of his books: The Displaced, The Refugees, and The Sympathizer.

We are grateful to have been part of this wonderful literary event.

After the event, we sent out a thank you email to guests, for supporting LARB and taking part in a splendid evening.

We made the following slideshow commemorating some of the event’s highlights.

Special thanks to Alex Zam for the wonderful photos.
